Documentary Assignment

The video that made me recontextualize the phrase ‘allahu akbar’  This video is incredibly powerful and I suggest you watch it.

Rafat’s experience as a syrian refugee

Talking points to lead to deeper insights

  • Rafat lived in a syrian refugee camp for years
  • Rafat’s family still lives in a refugee camp
  • Rafat sends money to his family
  • Rafat has seen war
  • Rafat is in BFTV
  • Rafat works as a video editor
  • Rafat is overworked
  • Rafat receives or received money as a sponsored refugee

Omar’s story

  • Omar has photos of his house after shelling, which are visually compelling and elicits an emotional response.

These are the sources which I used in the final product

Intrigue / hook:

What it was like having to run and with only the clothes on your back

Raising the stakes:

The things you need to do to survive

Target audience:

People like myself that have a fragmented knowledge of muslim countries, or have not experienced war and may not grasp the severity of the experiences

The ‘setting’ is syria, although the interview will take place in my apartment

  • Canon camera
  • Lighting Kit
  • Microphone

  • Lifestyle, where he lived, education, social life, family life
  • Beginning(?) of military conflict in Syria (march 15th, 2011)

  • The horrors of war
  • Evacuating from city
  • Moving into refugee camp
  • Living conditions in refugee camp
  • Where his family is now, what they’re going through

Recording Setup

Colour Correction

Order of events

  1. Introduction
  2. Helicopter fireworks
  3. Arrests
  4. Fleeing to border, turned away
  5. Smugglers to second gate
  6. Bombing
  7. Mother leaves, sneaking past checkpoints
  8. Mountain trek
  9. Arrival at border, safe feeling
  10. Looking back

Getting audio consistent!

  • Create new audition files from recording1 recording2, recording3
  • Try with just hiss reduction, try with just noise reduction from print, decide which goes first and if both are beneficial
  • Hiss reduction (8, 24)
  • Noise reduction from print (20, 15)
  • Denoise (40) (this may be degrading the audio)
  • Rename new audition extractions so they’re identifiable
  • Replace current audition extractions with new audition extractions
  • Remove previous audition extractions
An incredibly powerful video

Activity 3.1

John Snow is a significant historical figure in the field of epidemiology, the study of how illnesses spread.

This came at a time that Cholera was not well understood and it was believed that the illness was spread through the air. John imposed data of an outbreak over a map that led to the discovery that cholera was not airborne, but occurred nearby water pumps that  carried tainted water.

Activity 3.2

Noelia, Rowan, Holly, & Sara

Relationship: scatter plot of spending vs income.

This graph shows a clear relationship, with a strong linear grouping. One issue might be that there seems to be two groups which makes any findings or results not immediately apparent.

Time frame or trend: google searches for ‘dystopia’ and ‘utopia’ between 2004 & 2021

The graphs have a lot of visual contrast and can be visually compared with ease, although the graph lacks clarity of information. Without interacting with the graph the user is unable to identify the year on the x axis, or the value on the y axis.

Composition: Pie chart of wealth distribution

Data is represented by overall size or relative value, groups are easily distinguished making this graph successful at communicating information on first glance.

Comparison: Bar graph of spending

Values are visually compared in a way that does not incorporate relative values or percentages. The differences are immediately apparent without spending much time looking at the graph.

Activity 3.3

  1. Visualization and illustration
  2. Working with data & data analysis
  3. Narrative & Storytelling

Activity 3.4

  1. Innovation, science, and development
  2. Infrastructure and communities
  3. Transport?

Grouping with Malcolm Darko, Julia Correia, and myself. The topic is Health & public safety.

Activity 4.1

Canadian monthly natural gas distribution, Canada and provinces (x1,000)

Categorical variables

  • Deliveries to industrial consumers
  • Deliveries to commercial and institutional customers
  • Deliveries to residential consumers

Time and date variables

  • March 2021
  • April 2021
  • May 2021
  • June 2021
  • July 2021

Numerical data, corresponding with each of the categorical variables combined with each of the time variables.

Activity 4.2

This can be displayed a few ways. Potentially the best way to display the entire dataset is by using a line graph for comparison.

Perhaps the best way to display the categorical variables within a single time variable would be to either use a pie graph for relative composition or a bar graph for comparison.
